Unfortunately, President Trump’s “ceasefire” in the war with Iran appears undeserving of the name. U.S. ally Israel continues to bomb Lebanon, while reports suggest the Strait of Hormuz has not yet been reopened.
While any reduction in hostilities saves lives, it’s clear the instability unleashed by the U.S.-Israel war on Iran is far from over. And among the biggest beneficiaries, Meghan Schneider and Cass DiPaola note, are U.S. oil companies, who have profited from skyrocketing fuel costs.
But making war profitable is dangerous to both world peace and the consumers who get shafted, they warn. They suggest a “windfall tax” on corporate profits from this war — an idea they have polling to suggest would be very popular.
Also this week, Don Bell calls on lawmakers to protect our cell phone data from government surveillance in the age of AI. And Farrah Hassen speaks out against the increasingly brazen Islamophobia of some politicians.
