The Trump administration has attempted to justify its harsh crackdown on immigrants as helpful for American workers. But as Sarah Lazare reports this week, the overwhelming evidence is that it’s doing the opposite.

Sarah points to examples, from labor organizers being targeted for deportation to federal immigration agents harassing U.S.-born workers on a picket line. And she highlights a growing body of research highlighting how immigration crackdowns actually lead to more wage and workplace violations against all workers, reduce jobs available for U.S.-born employees, and hurt the economy overall. Trump’s “masked, armed federal agents are creating hostile environments for all workers, not just immigrants,” she concludes.

Meanwhile, Jordan Liz highlights the administration’s perverse rationale for targeting children in ICE raids. In the view of hardliners like Stephen Miller, Jordan explains, “the children of immigrants are just as — if not more — dangerous than their parents.” Therefore, “ICE will arrest, detain, cage, traumatize, and tear gas them. Agents will use them as bait, deny their rights, and deport them in the name of defending America.” Instead, Jordan calls on Americans to stand up for children and others who can’t defend themselves.

Also this week, Eric Morrissette explains the importance of a Supreme Court case over whether Trump can fire a Fed governor. And Jim Hightower exposes the ruse behind the GOP’s so-called “ban” on stock trading by members of Congress.
