Court battles continue this week over the Trump administration’s attempts to fire vast swathes of federal workers, often unlawfully and without cause.
This week, Paul Osadebe — a federal employee himself — defends these public servants.
“Without us, nobody would be able to get their Social Security checks, or their Medicare and Medicaid benefits. Veterans wouldn’t get free, high quality health care tailored to their specific needs. Discrimination wouldn’t be monitored and stopped,” Paul writes. He says he’s refusing to resign and encourages other federal workers to dig in, too.
Meanwhile, Sulma Arias says an urgent grassroots response is needed as the effects of these firings— and the GOP’s deep proposed service cuts — continue to climb.
“No matter who we voted for, no one wants to see our grandparents forced onto the street, our schools without teachers, or our babies dying because there are no more hospitals,” Sulma writes. “Yet all of these things will happen in the United States if deep cuts to essential programs like Social Security, SNAP, Medicare, and Medicaid take effect.”
Also this week, calls on the government to release Mahmoud Khalil, the Palestinian student the Trump administration is attempting to deport for speaking out. And Paul Armentano surveys the state governments defying their voters over legal marijuana.
