Affordability is a major theme of this year’s midterms, and for good reason. But whatever happens in November, harsh Medicaid cuts are already scheduled to go into effect after them. Last year’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” slashed Medicaid, SNAP, and other programs to fund tax cuts for the rich, a $1 trillion Pentagon budget, and an unprecedented boost for ICE.
These cuts will make life considerably less affordable for Americans who are already struggling. This week in OtherWords, California mom Margarita Spataro shares how the cuts could make it harder to care for her disabled daughter. And Ramya Gosike documents how the administration tried to justify the cuts by scapegoating immigrants. In reality, Ramya points out, “immigrants didn’t take your health care. ICE did.”
