For a long while now, democracy experts have been sounding the alarm about threats, both institutional and political, to our democracy. Not least, there are outright lies attacking vulnerable groups like Haitian migrants who are here perfectly legally, doing valuable work, and giving back to their communities — a topic I wrote about last week.
This week, Sonali Kolhatkar documents the increasingly brazen attacks on voters, organizers, and advocates by grandstanding red state officials — a pattern of attacks she says is blatantly illegal voter intimidation. Paul Sonn explains how institutionally undemocratic practices, like gerrymandering and the Senate filibuster, have held back big gains for workers. And Jim Hightower lays out how Big Ag’s lobbyists shake down America’s farmers, even in a good growing year.
Democracy, in short, isn’t just about counting votes. It’s about making sure people have a meaningful say in the conditions that affect their lives, including their wages, jobs, and the overall economy. When democracy comes up short, our pocketbooks do too. All the more reason to protect it.
